The National Immigration Project has published an important advisory explaining the serious consequences immigrants may face if they decide to “self-deport” under current Trump Administration policies. While some people are being promised money or the possibility of returning legally in the future, the reality is far more dangerous than it sounds.
We also talked about this issue in our February blog article Is Self Deportation
an Option?, warning about the growing pressure on immigrants to leave the U.S. voluntarily and the long-term consequences of that decision. This new report provides more detail about what’s at stake.
The report warns:
You could face years or even a lifetime ban from returning to the U.S.
Past immigration problems, certain crimes, or even small mistakes like using a false Social Security number could block your visa forever.
Once you leave, you may lose your chance to fight your immigration case.
Coming back without permission could mean prison time and thousands of dollars in fines.
Leaving the U.S. is a life-changing decision. Please take time to learn all the facts, talk to a trusted immigration attorney, and read the full article before making any choice you can’t undo.
